Hawaii, Belize, Mexico, Bahama's, Florida, the Coyote Ugly Shrimp has proved tremendously productive everywhere I have fished it. just about all of them! As far as utility pattens go, this is my all time favorite.and not just for the Bahamas. You guessed it Coyote! As I have mentioned before, the natural tans, creams, grays, browns and blacks give this fantastic fur an extremely natural look, that blend will with mottled bottoms … just like the creatures that live there. The key to this versatile bug are the materials used.

While some of my flies are designed to imitate a very specific prey item, the Coyote Ugly Shrimp was created with a more impressionistic strategy in mind. Over my past few adventures, I have come to enjoy exploring the flats in search of the minuscule crustaceans inhabiting the shallow water almost as much as catching bonefish. Yet I am still compelled to pack my vise and a Grinch sized sack of tying materials just in case I need to create a new pattern or heaven forbid… run out of a hot one.Īlthough the count of bonefish patterns existing today numbers in the thousands, with every trip to the Bahamas, I find myself impelled to create another one. 98% of my excessive assortment never see the light of day let a lone touch the water. As the trip grows near, the excitement builds and I feverishly tie an excess of flies, loading my boxes far beyond a reasonable capacity.

Put it all together with a long slow strip and the occasional “tip waggle” and you will find even the most persnickety eaters will find this rabbit recipe irresistible. It sounds like a tall order, but it can be accomplished by combining a few familiar materials with some bizarre techniques. Oh yeah did I mention it needs to push water irregularly to aid the swimming action of the fly, it can’t water log or come down with a heavy “splat” AND it shouldn't foul ether. Wrestling these saltwater bruisers require a stout hook that is not easily straightened, soft yet durable materials that move effortlessly in the water and last but not least, something to keep it all suspended just under the surface. When looking up for food, darker colors that silhouette against a light sky background are easier to see and therefor increase your chances for a strike. The position of their eyes makes it easier for them to see their prey at eye level or overhead in the water column. The target species of the Tuscan Bunny are ambush feeders with an upward facing morphology, like Tarpon or Snook whose eyes are positioned closer to the tops of their heads.

Thousands of casts, hundreds of refusals and countless hours of testing and tweaking…that is what it takes to transform a mélange of natural and synthetic materials in to a reliably productive fly pattern. However the evolution of the pattern has taken place over the past three years and it is a culmination of purposely-selected materials and techniques for applying them. At first glance the fly’s modest list of materials and simple construction may be mistaken for a hastily thrown together mess of fur and foam. Although the jagged and asymmetrical shaped head is not much to look at, it like the rest of the elements that make up the fly are by design. The peculiar looking Tuscan Bunny fly is most certainly the prior of the two. It has been said, “ that some flies are tied to catch fish and others to catch the fisherman who buy them.”
